Among The Sleep — A Horror Game in The Eyes of A Toddler

If you are looking for a truly unique horror game experience – Among the Sleep really takes the cake. Quite literally, it starts you off as a very young toddler getting some cake from your mother.

But seriously, Among the Sleep was a game that took me by surprise. Because you actually play as a toddler. And the feeling of helplessness that comes along with it adds to the terror. That, and actually failing. Because it’s no longer just the character that dies, it’s a toddler.

I admit, I felt VERY guilty whenever I made a mistake in the horror game, which is a unique feeling in a genre where death is so common.

What I Liked About Among the Sleep

The gameplay and design are beautiful. It is smooth, and for the most part, I didn’t struggle. I admit I have a principle: if things take me longer than 20 minutes to figure out, then I will probably look up the walkthrough. This did unfortunately happen, but it’s probably my own sleep-deprived dumbness that caused it more than the game.

The design was beautiful, specifically the character itself. It really feels like you are playing a toddler. My favorite thing was the absolutely adorable fall when you, as the player, run out of stamina. It is such a common toddler thing to do, which really sold it for me.

I was constantly “ooohing and awwhing” over this character, and it admittedly made me very protective. Which instantly made the horror game far more terrifying.

Because when you care for your character – a trait that is often lacking within the horror game genre – suddenly you have something to lose.

Which is why Little Misfortune is also so compelling.

But I digress. The developers really did a stellar job making you care for a character who never even had to speak a single word.

The teddy bear – the guide – was also such an excellent choice. A secret guardian that glowed to light up the way whenever you hugged him really sold it as well. I loved him dearly too.

A Drawback or Two

Sometimes it was a little hard to figure out where to go. Again, it could be the game, or it could be my lack of basic orientation skills. So this really isn’t much of a critique and more of a note on what I struggled with personally while playing.

The storyline is a little blurry. I love this game, it is a good horror, but I felt a little lost at the end. I do understand the majority of horror games are this way, where it leaves it up to your own interpretation, but sometimes I wish games had a little more clarity on where they were going with the story.

The monsters, however – it was clear to see who the monsters actually were. So that I can give credit for.

Among the Sleep is a GOOD Horror Game

With all that being said, I can absolutely recommend this horror game – it’s really a great experience, you care about the character, and it’s unique. Horror characters are, for the most part, based on adults and on occasion children.

But toddlers? It’s rare, and they absolutely sold it with the game mechanics. So 10/10 for that.
